Writer's Workshop Philosophy

I completed a four week training institute through the Heart of Texas Writing Project (HTWP)  that is housed at the University of Texas during the summer of 2017 and am excited to implement writer's workshop this school year. The HTWP is associated with the National Writing Project (NWP). The HYWP was founded by Randy Bomer. I am more than happy to share research and professional texts about writer's workshop, its purpose and validity with you. If you have any questions, please email or set up a conference with me.
Writer's workshop is a place where students practice what they are learning; it is where students learn with their peers, from their peers, and from their own inquires; it is a place where students are respected and treated as valuable humans; and where a student’s voice, work, ideas, and progress are valued; where a teacher’s task is to guide and assist in the act of learning, pushing students to learn beyond the walls of the classroom; where deep intellectual work is organic, and focused on the individual needs of students; it is place where the teacher is also a learner… and a place where worksheets & packets do not exist.
Students are expected to write everyday in school, at home and to keep a writer's notebook. Developing a writer's life will help students become independent in the creation and development of their ideas. Students will always have choice in topic, will undergo genre studies and small units of inquiry, along with publishing their own work frequently throughout the year. Students writing grades will be based off of a strength the student exhibited, willingness to try new strategies in their writing, going through the writing process and using their time wisely and appropriately during workshop time.
